Frequently Asked Questions

The Aviral Godavari Mission, a collaborative effort by The Satsang Foundation with Namami Goda and various other partners, is a vital initiative focussed on rejuvenating the Godavari river and ensuring its uninterrupted flow throughout the year. This mission is a response to the pressing challenges of climate change, water scarcity, and ecological imbalance.
Human activity and climate change has significantly affected the flow of the Godavari river, posing a threat to both the ecology and the economy, impacting the lives of millions across multiple states in India. By revitalizing the river, we safeguard communities, restore the region’s ecology, and work towards a sustainable future.
The Aviral Godavari Mission aims to achieve several key objectives. These include the restoration of water bodies within the Godavari’s ecosystem and its basin, implementation of watershed management techniques, ecological rejuvenation through soil restoration and reforestation, preventing waste (including solid waste such as plastics as well as effluents) from flowing directly into the Godavari and the water bodies around it, and active community engagement to ensure that the process and behavioural changes multiply and sustain across the society, government and businesses.
The overall Mission is expected to last several years, from Brahmagiri mountain, where the Godavari originates to Rajmundry. To ensure positive momentum the Mission is being taken up in Phases.
Phase 1 is focussed on region between Brahmagiri and Ramtirth in Nashik, where the sacred Kumbh Mela is held on a 12-year cycle. Within the Phase, there are several projects identified in each of the workstreams, which are being taken up by different teams.
The Aviral Godavari Mission is working under the overall guidance of Sri M, Founder of The Satsang Foundation, and Dr. Rajendra Singh, who heads Tarun Bharat Sangh and is also known as the Water Man of India (“Jal Purush”).
The working teams comprise of experts in specific areas (for instance, heritage architecture, infrastructure planning, hydrology, ecology etc.) and professionals and volunteers from diverse streams. These working teams draw upon external resources from partner organisations and also specialised firms.
The initiatives have also received resource support from Government departments and agencies.
Financial support for the various projects and workstreams are being welcomed from individuals, associations and private organisations.
The mission’s impact extends beyond the immediate region. It would serve as a national and global example of effective environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of collective action in the face of climate change.
The Aviral Godavari Mission is not a government project, but a grassroots-upwards programme to rejuvenate the Godavari and its ecosystem. It is spearheaded by Civil Society Organisations and citizens from all walks of life. Majority of the activities are carried out through individual and corporate contributions of time and resources, both in cash and in kind.
In some projects, departments of different tiers of government actively support some of the activities as partners, which provides additional momentum to the projects.
You can actively participate by volunteering, engaging in community programs, making financial contributions, and raising awareness about the mission. Every contribution helps us move to our collective goal of rejuvenating the Godavari river and creating a sustainable future for all.
